Road safety week commences

The UKs biggest road safety awareness event aims to make Leeds roads safer for cyclists.

Road safety charity Brake have chosen the theme of ‘’bike smart’’ for this years event. Motorcyclists and cyclists are considered to be the most vulnerable when using the roods.

Over 100 riders a day in the UK are affected by preventable accidents.

2017 saw 281 cyclists and 170 motorcyclists injured. 64 of these were seriously injured.

The event encourages members of the public to take action and familiarize themselves with the correct safety protocols when out and about on there bikes in Leeds.

Cyclists are told to ensure their safety by:

  • Leaving plenty of room on the road
  • Drivers need to be aware of road users on two wheels
  • Cyclists being safe by wearing safety gear and using their bikes responsibly.

Leeds city council are supporting Brake’s road safety week by issuing a school wide cycling safety sessions.
