If you’re from out of town, you might consider Leeds to be a forgotten Yorkshire backwater hovel. In truth, you couldn’t be more wrong. Outside of that London, Leeds is the financial and legal capital of the north, and all those busy-body accounts and law folks have got to eat somewhere. Not to mention the hordes of famished students, itching to wax that student loan on hangover cures. Here’s the top five run-down of their favourite haunts.
Ira B’s No.1
The New York style deli is popular for its rustic charm and famously friendly staff. Ira describes her place as a snack bar for “classic Jewish food, with a slightly bonkers mood”. The bistro boasts a very cosy, informal environment that attracts diners from all over Leeds into this hidden gem of a place just off Street Lane. Customers are welcome to dine in, grab and go or request delivery for parties and events.
Moment’s Cafe No.2
The Moments café located near the river Aire serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is run independently by a family and is open from 6pm till 10pm on Mondays to Fridays. Visitors say this great little café has a small and cosy atmosphere which serves freshly made food that has a homemade touch to it. From eggs to burgers, this café offers an extensive menu which is suitable for anybody’s needs. With friendly service, you are certain to enjoy your meal.
Trattoria Il Forno No.3
Trattoria Il Forno is the third best rated restaurant in Leeds overall and number 1 in Horsforth. It has many regular visitors and one family described it as, one of the best Italians they have been to including the ones they have visited in Italy. Il Forno provides a friendly atmosphere and plenty of food for your money, it is the best place to eat if you are looking for some high quality Italian food.
Now settled in the Corn Exchange after starting out as a food vender on Briggate farmers’ market, Humpit is a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern inspired place to dine. The small restaurant is Yorkshire’s first dedicated Hummus and Pita bar and has recently been voted best street food start-up in 2015. Open 7 days a week, it has quickly become a massive hit with the Leeds’ public for a quick, affordable and quality meal.
2 Oxford Place No.5
If you’re a vegan or vegetarian in Leeds, look no further than 2 Oxford Place. Serving gluten free delights in their city center location, this popular restaurant and bar is raved about – their popular dishes being the fish and chips and a stunning afternoon tea. With reasonable prices and friendly, attentive staff, this unique and quirky bistro was guaranteed to be a hit with both Leeds’ residents and visitors to the city.
